Dear Butterflies,
My life was changed in the middle of 2024. My father had suffered a major stroke & my entire world as I knew it, flipped upside down. It was such a dim, confusing & incredibly emotional time for me, feeling so raw & tender, but expressing the love in my heart for my parent in every way I could. Something inside me called out to the sea, beckoning. Then, after a long, long time of waiting for that one boat to arrive, a boat I'd been waiting for my entire life, a boat that I thought I kept seeing but turning out to be a mirage every single time, arrived, only a couple months afterward. It was so unexpected yet completely expected. I fell in love. For real this time. When you actually fall in love, for real, you finally realize what love actually is & that everything in the past does not compare in the slightest. Every love song I've ever written before now is simply a dream, a fantasy, a vision. Something I longed for, but may not have been ready for. I am ready now. So I wrote an album.
I have learned a lot more about myself & that relationships, especially with someone who has been through a fair share of damage, can be tricky. It takes a lot of perseverance, bravery, passion, understanding & loyalty. Love is not all sunshine, roses & chocolates. The clouds will swell up & rain. The thunder will clap & the lightning will strike. It's how you weather the storm & recover from it that matters the most. Your kisses mean a lot but your kisses during & after a storm mean the world.
Doubt may happen, not just with your partner, within yourself. Uncertainty, lack of confidence, of worthiness. Being made to feel you mean nothing by so many can truly damage you inside & scare off those who are unwilling to dig deeper. Those who were too scared to walk through the dark tunnel, ran away in fear, unknowing of all the light, loyalty & love after it. My heart is not only a dark tunnel but deep in the ocean. I've been waiting for someone to swim through the dark waters to discover the heart of the ocean underneath. To rescue it. To bring it to the light.
Heart of the Ocean is the name of my 26th studio album. It was created in collaboration with the amazingly talented Kasbo (Carl Garsbo), the inventive Nils Hoffman & the ecstatic Jerro (Jeroen Decosemaker), as well as a plethora of guest vocalists (and writers!) It marks a personal record in my career as the longest amount of time I have worked on a body of work. So much blood, sweat & tears went into the making of this record & I have never been so proud of my work. I usually am extremely self-reliant, and I remained so, but also relied on some strong chefs to cook in my kitchen.
The amazing Panos Davios worked with me & captured the idea of my album brilliantly through his photography. We shot the photoshoot in Santorini, Greece. According to Greek mythology, Santorini was created from a lump of earth that was thrown into the sea by Euphemus, Poseidon's son. This mythological metaphor references the volcanic eruption that occurred around 3,600 years ago, leaving behind what is now known as the Santorini Caldera. The symbolism of this stunning island spoke volumes to me. Even after destruction & devastation, otherworldly beauty may arise. A rebirth. We don't know what will happen in the future but we survived the past & arose. Let it be known.
Heart of the Ocean releases to the world through Butterfly Records on June 26th, with a plethora of formats including double vinyl & cassette tapes in various shades of blue, CD, and on all streaming platforms. Butterfly Records will be hosting a Midnight Album Release Party on the night of June 25th where an exclusive Ocean Sunlight Edition will only be available (remaining stock may be available afterward varying on location). I am so excited to share this all with you.
